Rusty Downs Art Studio

I found my passion for art in my early childhood years on our farm in Iowa.  Most of my early drawings were of our horses on the rolling landscape around our farmland.  I was in Art classes all through school and won several Art show displays in high school. I went to a Fashion and Art College in Omaha, NE where I learned more about colors, fabrics, composition, interior design, fashion design, marketing and business.  After finishing college, I moved to Jackson, WY (1988-1992) where I became friends and was mentored by an art legend named Bill Freeman. Bill and I spent several years hiking and setting up our easels palette knife oil painting the majestic Tetons and Gros Ventre mountain ranges around the Jackson Hole area. Bill and I also sometimes painted with another artist named Carol Swinney.  I then moved to the Boulder, CO area in late 1992 where we established ourselves in Lafayette (1992-2015) before I designed and built our custom home in 2015 in unincorporated East Boulder County. I’ve had various careers in my past in fashion merchandising, clothing retail but my long term career was working for McStain Homes as their Home Studio Designer and Director. McStain also entrusted me with creating and implementing four model home projects from cradle to grave. I currently work in my home office for a window fashion company and this career has allowed me to have a flexible schedule and the time to paint again.  I set up a designated art studio and found my new style desire of painting.  Our current human nature, environmental hazards and natural disasters has inspired my style of painting of abstract modernism and surrealism of our society and world. I hope that you find my paintings complex and engaging.
